Use of fire is restricted at ZCG to the bonfire at the lake or your camp stove. Fire producing devices, like lanterns, small grills, camp stoves, and such must be at least 18 inches above the ground. No open flames are allowed and that means candles too (Yes, even your awesome lanterns made from cans that you bought in the Fair). There are no fire rings in the park and don’t even think of putting a flame on the ground. Also, propane firepits that satisfy the 18-inch rule, are not allowed. These restrictions are placed for a reason. Where people camp at ZCG is essentially mowed grass that has dried. In some years the grass can be VERY dry and it doesn’t take too much imagination to see how a grassfire could catch flame to nylon taffeta tents with beautiful hippies in them. It is a major drag to not be able to have campfires, but we have to be super safe on this one.
fire dancers
Zummies love poi and fire dancers. While there aren't any explicit rules about it, dancers would do well to check in with registration before lighting up. In dry years, expect to be flatly told "no." There are actually some pretty stiff regulations on fire dance performances and whipping flames around on chains with crowds about is not time for amateur hour. If you're a fire dancer, consider leaving the torches at home. Of course, non-flammable poi are welcome throughout the park and look AWESOME.
fireworks
You didn't shoot off all those fireworks the weekend before Fair. Don't...don't even think about it. Zumwalt is a beautiful natural area and even fireworks legal in Oregon would at the very least damage the grass, and at worst, could start a fire. Zumwalt is just not the right place for fireworks. There is plenty of eye-candy without fireworks. Leave 'em at home.
