two decades on and the freak flag still flying...
Perhaps it's easiest to say what Zumwalt Campground is not like. It's not like camping at a state park with strangers. It's not like camping at other festivals. It's not crazy, but it's freaky. It is anything but boring. Zumwalt Campground is NOT like the outside world. It is so much more.
Here's what Zumwalt campers say...
It's hard to tell a person what to expect because each person and the family they camp with has their own experience (Everyone at ZCG is family...No, really). Some people seek a quiet and restful time outside of the Fair. But many people embrace the fact that ZCG is an event in and of itself. Two decades ago ZCG was created to give people going to Fair a place to stay, but today it would happen if there were no Fair. The why is complex; it's the place, the authentic experience every year, the throng of throbbing, wild, wonderful people, the FUN. For a weekend, time stands still, and the outside world is drowned out by a torrent of beauty.
Imagine hugging, dancing, gaping in wonder, laughing until you cry and then getting up the next day and doing it all again, and on the last day feeling your heart sweetly break because it's over for another 362 days and you won't see these people and this place you love so dearly until then. That is what camping at Zumwalt is like.
